Abstract

MORES is an innovative research project that addresses the challenges faced by liberal democracy, particularly concerning the role of moral emotions, values, and identities in politics. The research and innovation project aims to counter both the detachment of citizens from politics and the overemotionalisation of political debates, recognising the threats these phenomena pose to democratic principles. Supported by the Horizon Europe framework programme, MORES is a collaborative effort among nine European institutions, scheduled to run until the end of 2026. MORES aims to achieve several key objectives: Empirical Insight: The project seeks to create scientific evidence on how moral emotions shape political identities. By understanding this connection, MORES aims to harness the potential of moral emotions to unite citizens towards democratic causes. Better Policymaking: MORES conducts several research tasks to reveal the impact of moral emotions on society. This new insight empowers policymakers to make informed decisions that strengthen European values and foster trust in governance.
